In January 2018, the series was renewed for a 16-episode ninth season, which premiered on October 7. Series writer and executive producer Angela Kang took over the role of showrunner from Scott M. Gimple, who was promoted to chief content officer for The Walking Dead franchise. The season starts with a timeskip of about a year and a half from Season 8, which coincides with the comic's narrative after the "All Out War" arc. Season nine is Andrew Lincoln's and Lauren Cohan's final season on the show. |
